Team USA is going all out to win the gold medal, including when it comes to skin care. Before heading to Paris, the Summer Olympic athletes shared with Us Weekly the secrets to looking great on the field.
According to Paralympic athlete Ezra French, the first step to success is sleep.
“Sleep works in a 48-hour cycle,” French explains. “If you wake up feeling tired after 12 hours of sleep, it’s because you had a bad night’s sleep.”
In addition to sleep, moisturizer is a must-have for many athletes. Whether it’s for the body, face, or lips, Team USA swimmer Daniella Ramirez agrees, “You don’t want your skin to be flaky.” Ramirez’s teammate, Kate Douglas, agrees, saying she always carries lotion with her because long hours in the pool “gets drying.” [her skin] Paralympic swimmer Mackenzie Coan also uses niacinamide and hyaluronic acid to combat dry skin.
Weather can be unpredictable for athletes who are outdoors, but archer Casey Cauhold and field hockey player Kelsey Bing say the U.S. team always packs sunscreen. Soccer player Crystal Dunn calls herself a “huge sunscreen fan” and told viewers, “You have to protect yourself.” [their] skin.”
Some athletes stick to the basics, like fencer Lee Kiefer, who told us, “If she washes her face and puts lotion on, it’s a good day,” and powerlifter Bobby Boddy agrees, naming Icy Hot as his sole form of self-care.

Some people put as much effort into their appearance as they do their training. Paralympic cyclist Okusava Masters has integrated her interest in skincare and makeup into her sport, telling us that loved ones describe her makeup as “warrior paint.”
“The race is early in the morning, but I’m up at 5 a.m. and taking my time so I’m not rushing,” Masters said. “I firmly believe I can look good, feel good and have a good race.”
