Though it’s still the height of swimsuit season, summer is quickly coming to an end, and it’s time to at least start thinking about what you want to add to your fall wardrobe. But before I can add anything to my closet, I need to declutter, starting with my denim collection.
Once the weather cools down, I wear jeans almost every day. So, my denim collection is pretty huge, but I often forget which jeans are in my pile and end up wearing the one that’s on top of it. I’m determined to change that and clear out my pile of jeans before September arrives, so I’ve decided to organize the jeans I own and donate the old ones once and for all.
If your jeans are starting to look dated, there’s no point in keeping them, as you’ll likely never wear them again. I work in fashion, so I know all too well what trends are coming (or have already gone), so you can rest easy knowing that.
Scroll through to see which outdated denim trends I’m eliminating, and shop the denim I’ll be buying instead before September arrives.
Pull: Mom Jeans
Add: Barrel Leg Jeans
Considering the popularity of mom jeans a few years back, it seemed like they’d never go out of style, but the trend isn’t as fresh as it once was by any standards. But fast forward to 2024, and perhaps the freshest denim trend around is the barrel jean. Nearly every cool brand is backing this newest style.

Low-rise jeans continue to reign supreme, but the type of low-rise jeans you get is key. We highly recommend avoiding the outdated low-rise skinny jeans and investing in low-rise baggy jeans. Baggy jeans are as cool as ever and are undoubtedly a celeb’s favorite denim trend.

While ultra-casual ripped jeans don’t fit with this year’s fashion’s elegant aesthetic, one trend that definitely does is dark denim. The darkest washes look great both day and night.

This may be a controversial statement, but cropped jeans are out of fashion right now. I think they will come back eventually, but for now, full-length, paddle and the latest trend, capri jeans, are the way to go. My advice is to buy slim-fitting jeans and wear heels.

Flared jeans have been trying hard to come back into style for the past few seasons, but the general public has yet to discover their appeal. If you want to enjoy a classic yet forward-thinking style, choose a pair of high-rise, wide-leg jeans.
