A former Miss Kyrgyzstan watched her fiancé be locked up by his uncle, the president of Kyrgyzstan, after an “embarrassingly extravagant” marriage proposal.
Sadyr Dzhaparov was outraged that Avtandil Sabirbekov had used a government helicopter as part of an elaborate marriage proposal for the president’s niece, Razat Nurgozhoyeva, 23.
Japarov immediately issued a statement condemning the suggestion and suggesting that Nurgozhoyeva might “draw the right conclusions from this.”
But after two weeks of no apology from her potential new husband, the president lost patience and ordered Savirbekov arrested on drug charges, The Telegraph reported.
This comes as Kyrgyzstan has been hit by landslides and floods in recent weeks, killing dozens of people.

Sadyr Japarov (pictured) was outraged that Sabirbekov used a government helicopter to make the elaborate proposal, even as Kyrgyzstan suffered deadly weather this month. Nurgozhoyeva, 23, was Miss Kyrgyzstan 2020 and has since removed the viral engagement video from social media. In addition to ordering the arrest of the woman who was meant to become part of his family, Japarov told media that Savirbekov did not love the former beauty pageant star, adding that he had only proposed to her to protect himself from future arrest.
Drug convictions in Kyrgyzstan tend to carry years of prison time.
The engagement video shows the couple arriving at the top of the hill in a £1,500-an-hour emergency helicopter, despite extreme weather conditions across the country this month.
They exited the helicopter and walked to the fireworks display, where they saw a message that read, “Will you marry me?”
Kyrgyzstan’s president has made a point of cracking down on waste in public finances since taking power in a 2020 coup, and the video quickly went viral across the country.
Nurgozhoyeva, Miss Kyrgyzstan 2020, has since removed the video from social media.
A state of emergency was declared in the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh earlier this month after landslides and floods killed at least four people, including more than a dozen killed in similar weather events in recent months.
