Hip-hop icon KRS-One will be spearheading a powerful peace movement on the 51st birthday of hip-hop culture, August 11. Dubbed the HIP-HOP 51 “Walk This Way” march for urban health and nonviolent conflict resolution, the event is expected to be historic with KRS-One at the forefront.
The march will begin at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, the birthplace of hip hop, where KRS-One and other leaders will hold a closed press conference and give opening remarks. After the press conference, he and other leaders will gather in Cedar Park to begin the march at 10 a.m. ET.
Participants will check in and be authenticated in Cedar Park between 8am and 10am, then everyone will travel from Cedar Park to Crotona Park in the Bronx. Closing remarks will take place at 12pm ET.
Additional activities will continue at 3:30pm ET at the Hip Hop Temple in Newark, N.J. The free concert will run until 8pm and feature a festival-style atmosphere, including free food, water and activities for children and seniors.
KRS-One’s promotion of peace and conflict resolution through hip hop has long been well known. Legendary songs like “Self Destruction” (1989) and “Stop the Violence” (1988) have resonated for years as a vocal advocate for social change. KRS, known as The Teacha, has consistently used his platform to address important issues facing urban communities.
