Following Black Fashion Week Prague and Black Fashion Week Paris, Montreal will host its first ever Black Fashion Week, which opens on May 15th and runs until May 17th. The event will be hosted by Adama Paris, a Senegalese designer who also hosted Africa’s Dakar Fashion Week. Fashion Awards — aims to celebrate fashion while revealing the cultural richness of the Black diaspora.
The term “Black Fashion Week” has recently been the subject of intense debate due to its racial connotations. “Why not have a white fashion week?” Some people ask, “but Paris Fashion Week is already white!” “We simply wanted to promote beyond Africa’s borders designers who are famous in Africa and in their own country but don’t have access to the global market,” Ndiayi told Agence France-Presse. The event also aims to promote underrepresented black models in fashion shows.
The Black Fashion Week Montreal catwalk takes place in the unique setting of St. John the Baptist Church in the heart of Montreal. This event will showcase 2013 trends for the black diaspora in three different worlds: JUST Fashion, ONLY Men and LIMITED Edition. “JUST Fashion” and “ONLY Men” offer essential ready-to-wear brands, while “LIMITED Edition” offers luxurious, high-fashion limited edition items. On the evening of May 15th, all fashion lovers are invited to the Black & Gold Party. The party is a dress code-required night that marks the beginning of the first Montreal Black Fashion Week. Fashion and networking rendezvous at Hotel 10 in Montreal. Designers will present their collections on May 16th and 17th from 6:30pm, and the fashion show will be followed by a VIP cocktail and after-party that combines press and designers. .
