The tennis scores may have only just finished, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to head to the dressing room, because a new athleisure trend is on the way: football jerseys. From our Instagram feeds to the Cosmo UK offices (thanks to beauty assistant Leah Mapoula), we’ve spotted even the most feminine fashion girls donning football shirts… just for style. Whether you’re teaming a new season kit with jeans or pairing a vintage design with a satin slip skirt, consider us totally in the Sporty Spice era.
So how do you bring this trend to life in the real world rather than on the football field or runway? Our favorite celebs are sporting a variety of vintage football shirts (sorry, couldn’t resist), giving us plenty of style inspiration in the process.
The latest look comes from Bella Hadid, who unveiled the new adidas Originals campaign in New York’s Times Square yesterday. [Thursday 11 July]She ditched her trademark Westerncore look for a look fit for the Euros final: a vintage red-and-white Adidas tracksuit and Levi’s 501 shorts, paired with calf-length white ribbed socks and Adidas Originals SL72 Fashion Trainers (Samba tucked to the side). Bella tucked the longline tracksuit into the micro shorts and cinch the whole look with a thick black leather belt.
And she’s not the only A-list star to embrace sporty summer style. Dua Lipa was quick to jump on the trend, regularly wearing multiple football jerseys, the latest being a red-and-pink retro jersey. But rather than showing support for a specific sports team, the jersey is merchandise for her latest album, Radical Optimism. What could be more symbolic than being your own cheerleader? We don’t think so.
Elsewhere, we’re really inspired by Kim Kardashian stepping out in a red Roma jersey, Addison Rae representing Brazil in an oversized shirt, Hailey Bieber teaming a chic black football jersey with cycling shorts, and let’s not forget Taylor Swift, who has made football shirts part of her off-duty kit, especially when she’s supporting her boyfriend Travis Kelcy.

As always, celebrity style has filtered down to the general public, with high street retailers and even independent businesses seeing an uptick in sales of football jerseys. This isn’t surprising, given that they’re a big part of another celeb-favourite trend: ‘brokecore’. Comprised of loose silhouettes, oversized tailoring and classically ‘masculine’ pieces, brokecore is firmly entrenched in British football culture. Plus, I’ll take any excuse to look back at David Beckham in his prime for some *cough* fashion inspiration. *cough*

So where did the latest in a long line of microtrends come from? The line between sportswear and fashion is becoming increasingly blurred. What was once confined to gym wear can now easily be worn for a coffee date with the girls, running weekend errands, or even a laid-back holiday look, thanks to trend-leading activewear brands like Alo Yoga and Adanola. Athleisure has come a long way from its track pants and high-top beginnings, and has firmly earned its place in the fashion world.
Theo El-Kattan and Henry McNeil, founders of online marketplace KnownSource, agree. “We’re seeing a rise in football capsule collections among major brands. From Adidas x Wales Bonner’s Samba to Nike x Martine Rose’s capsule collection for last year’s Women’s World Cup, the overlap is real,” they told Cosmopolitan UK. Outside of collaborations, bright football jerseys were a highlight of Balenciaga’s Resort 2023 collection, which was dominated by dark colors and blocky suiting.
Football’s influence on fashion is just as pervasive, and vice versa: “Football clubs are going beyond just launching lifestyle products to having in-house creative directors; Crystal Palace became the first Premier League club to hire a creative director last year,” Theo and Henry continue, noting that Kenny Annan Jonathan has been appointed to the newly created role.

But this may be one of those trends that can’t be traced back to the Kardashians’ wider influence, as the impact of the Lionesses is undeniable. According to the BBC, the number of registered women’s football teams in the UK has doubled compared to seven years ago, with a staggering 1,500 new teams registered in the season the Lionesses win Euro 2022. The rise in girls joining grassroots clubs means that the humble football kit is becoming the nation’s uniform, and we can expect to see a lot more of it now that this year’s Euros are in full swing.
The soccer jersey trend also provides a fresh opportunity to promote second-hand shopping, among the many micro-trends that encourage fast fashion standards. Look to resale sites like Vinted and Depop to pick up vibrant vintage jerseys without the negative environmental impact. Theo and Henry explain, “Every kit tells its own story and has its own place in history. Let’s not forget the design; many are works of art and it’s nice to see them getting the recognition they deserve.” We couldn’t agree more.
Whether you’re just getting interested in the sport, you’re an avid fan, or simply enjoy the trendy aesthetic (like me!), now is the perfect time to invest in a soccer jersey.[バスケットに追加]With the click of a button, you can go to a beer garden and explain the offside rule to anyone.
