Kinzil Mathur, chief marketing officer at American software services company Squarespace, said that jobs are hard to come by right now and Gen Z graduates will know who is at risk of losing their jobs, Fortune magazine reported on July 20.
Kinzil Mathur is based in New York and has worked in the fashion and technology sectors, and reportedly had to take a creative approach when she started out in the business 20 years ago.

Software services provider Squarespace is now valued at $6 billion, according to reports.
Mathur also noted that Gen X and older millennials have had a relatively easy experience finding employment, something she didn’t expect would happen immediately after completing her finance degree in 2000. Mathur was “worried about her future,” according to the report.
“Every summer I would look for an internship,” Masser told Fortune. “I just wanted to gain experience,” she said.
She shared her experience reaching out to businesses and people in her city, calling companies, asking for internships, and offering to work for free. This worked for Mather, and she landed a job with a travel company called Travelocity during her first summer at the University of Texas, working for free, which had an immense impact on her resume, the report said.
“Early in your career, you have to be willing to do anything,” Mathur says.
Mathur worked weekends for free and overtime. “I wasn’t focused on traveling,” she said. She emphasized the importance of being willing to work any hours, any pay, any job.
The internship snowball effect:
Mathur’s first internship experience paved the way for subsequent internships: She used the experience from her first internship to land an internship the following summer, she told Fortune.
Mathur’s strength was that he spoke differently to the interviewers. He had some insight into the industry, which helped him understand the way people talked about business. This helped him communicate better with the other interviewers, the report said. Mathur was then offered a full-time job as a technology consultant with global consulting firm Protiviti.
“I was in my 20s advising people much more senior than me on all things technology at the company,” Mathur said in the report, “so you can imagine the dynamics. It was not an easy job,” she added.
Gen Z’s status in the job market:
Like Mathur, young graduates of Generation Z are trying their luck with strangers in corporate settings to gain employment opportunities.
Fortune reported on Ashley Spiliopoulou, who told the magazine how she stumbled across her dream employer, Emerge, through Instagram. Her approach was different, and it gave her an advantage: She emailed the founder with a catchy subject line, “Hustle Proposal,” and now works at the company as a senior account executive. She described this cold email approach as “a life hack to avoid a lengthy interview process.”
Mathur also stressed on the importance of hard work. A cold call, email or tweet might open doors, but you have to keep working afterwards. She urged the younger generation to take things seriously, which is what got her a full-time job offer. Employers can withdraw an opportunity just as quickly as they present it.
Mathur suggested that Gen Z should ditch the list of requirements for job applicants and focus more on hard work. “The list of criteria for people graduating or currently in college is very long,” she said, adding that the time to be picky will come later.
The key for job seekers is to demonstrate a willingness to work and say, “If someone can give me some experience, I will be forever indebted to them,” Mathur said.
