Unlike many of her contemporary pop stars, Tate McRae is a pop star who constantly harkens back to pop music’s Y2K golden age with a stage presence that rivals Britney Spears.
Her confident aura is largely down to the years of dedicated dance (you may not know this, but McRae also had a brief stint on Dance Moms in 2015 and competed on So You Think You Can Dance in 2016), but her beauty routine is also a big part of it.
“I noticed that when I style my hair, I feel a lot better,” she says over Zoom, moments after applying Rose’s lip tint in Peach Pit, a sheer coral shade, in front of the camera. She also explains that having a straighter smile was a total game changer for her.
“I used to be very insecure about my teeth and hated smiling. Smiling was my least favorite thing to do,” she says.[Invisalign] It changed my life.”
Her newfound confidence was palpable even from the back row: “I had a huge smile on my face the entire hour that I was onstage,” she says.
Besides her long, softly curled brunette hair and her crystal-clear smile, McRae has one special superstition that gets her ready to perform in front of thousands of people: “If I have a big performance, I have to call my dad,” she says. “He just has to say this to me before I go onstage, and I know I’ll be OK. It puts me in a good frame of mind.”
She didn’t reveal exactly what he said at the time, but she did give Bustle an exclusive look at her beauty bag.

“I feel like my lips need to be moisturized, but I don’t know why it’s so important to me. [The Lip Tint] very good.”

“I always use the YSL Libre. It’s my go-to.”

“I put lots of oil on the ends so my hair looks shiny and pretty on stage. I use Gisou. It smells amazing.”
Her Body Glow Secret
“I always use Patrick TA Glow on my skin because it makes everything look so shimmery. I apply a generous amount to my body.”
Her backstage rituals
“I love vanilla candles. I always have a Snif Instant Karma candle in my dressing room and it’s my favorite.”

“I always pencil in Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk Lip Liner.”
