AETHER Apparel’s Mulholland Moto Jacket
In my quest to find the best adventure motorcycle gear, I often feel a bit like Goldilocks: this is too hot, that is too hard, the next thing isn’t waterproof, forcing me to pack rain gear that takes up valuable space in my pannier bags, etc. With AETHER releasing the Mulholland Motorcycle Jacket, could this quest finally be over?

The Mulholland Moto Jacket is a lightweight, durable 3-ply nylon waterproof jacket with D3O Ghost armor on the back, shoulders and elbows. D3O armor is known for being lightweight and flexible, and it compresses on hard impacts to absorb energy, making it the industry leader in impact absorbing body armor.

For increased ventilation, the jacket has four vents (two in the front and two in the back) to help regulate temperature. A two-way zipper and contoured sleeves allow for unrestricted movement on and off the bike. The Mulholland Jacket also has plenty of pockets, including expandable exterior handwarmer pockets and a soft-lined zippered pocket to protect your smartphone or sunglasses. Additionally, there’s a chest pocket with snap closure and zipper for easy access even with gloves on. Sleeves are gusseted and feature optional locking head zippers for ventilation. Zipper hardware is protected to prevent damage to your bike.
I put this jacket to the test in the Sonoran Desert. The large fit snugly across the chest, but the sleeves were a little long and I would have liked adjustable Velcro straps to tighten them. Although temperatures ranged from the low 40s in the morning to the high 80s in the afternoon, I was pleased with how the well-placed vents performed. The vents let air out and cooled me down as I rode. I never got too hot, even in tough terrain. I liked the oversized zipper pulls, which were easy to find and operate, even with gloved hands. I could also open the center of the jacket to allow more airflow.

This jacket has plenty of pockets, and you can put your phone in any of them. The zippered hand pockets are a nice feature because they keep your hands warm off the bike on cool mornings. I also like the style of this jacket, and it was comfortable to wear around town during my lunch break. The jacket packs up pretty small, which I like. Unfortunately, I didn’t end up in any wet conditions during my testing, but the material seems to be waterproof, and the zippers have rubber seams that keep water out.
At $650, this jacket is definitely on the list and I think I found just the right one.
