Writer, director, actor, and producer Tyler Perry is once again taking streaming services by storm. This time we’ll be talking about Netflix’s “Beauty in Black” by Tyler Perry.

The new drama depicts two women from two different worlds who end up caught up in the same chaotic web of lies, betrayal, and danger. Meanwhile, Kimmy (Taylor Polidore Williams) is forced to work in a strip club and become a sex worker to pay off her debt to a man named Jules (Charles Malik Whitfield). Meanwhile, after a difficult childhood, Mallory (Crystal Stewart) helps her stepfather run his beauty business, which grows into a big business. As each episode progresses, these two women become linked to a ruthless and criminal family that harbors many secrets that threaten to destroy them and their most prized possessions. It becomes clear that he is willing to do whatever it takes to protect him.

If you’ve already read the first eight episodes of Beauty in Black, you probably want to see more. And since Part 2 of the debut season isn’t scheduled to premiere until spring 2025, there’s quite a bit of time before we find out what happens next for Kimmy and Mallory in this story. That being said, allow me to suggest a similar series you can enjoy while you wait… Starz’s drama “P-Valley.”

P-Valley centers around the fictional strip club The Pynk, a hotbed of mayhem and intrigue in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Owner Uncle Clifford (Nicco Annan) tries to keep his popular club open, but it’s not easy when faced with corrupt police, even more criminal politicians, and an overall moral uprising. We haven’t even touched on the fact that each dancer and even some of the patrons have their own personal dramas, which often spill over into The Pink.

Comparing the two shows, I tend to prefer P-Valley. The characters are a little more complex and the dialogue is more impactful. P-Valley also offers more gritty storylines, which are often perfect for dark dramas. Additionally, P-Valley has had two seasons, with a third season currently scheduled.

Ready to give P-Valley a try? P-Valley Seasons 1-2 are currently available on the Starz app in the US and can be subscribed to for as low as $2.99 per month. In the UK, episodes are available for purchase on services such as Prime Video.
