Are you always confused by what your kids and other young people are saying? Sometimes it may feel like they are speaking a different language. In fact, that is true as they use a lot of slang that is completely foreign to us. But now, Amazon Alexa has a new vocabulary update to help older users learn the slang of the younger generation.
The new feature, “Alexa, Talk to Gen Z,” will provide definitions and examples of 20 common words used by this generation, reports the Mirror. According to Amazon’s research, 83% of young people believe that older people have no idea what they’re talking about, and 35% feel embarrassed when older people misuse their slang. But don’t write off older generations: 56% outside of Gen Z say they’d like to learn new words.
If you want to understand what teenagers, pre-teens, and people in their twenties are talking about, here are some slang terms that Alexa will be able to explain to you:
Lowkey — “something subtle” It’s giving — “the tone that something imitates” Ick — “something embarrassing” Slay — “to show off with pride” Rizz — “dashing, charismatic” The math is mathing — “something that makes logical sense” Sus — short for “suspicious” Ate — “an expression of admiration for someone who is consuming success” Hot Girl Summer — “encouraging someone to be themselves and succeed without reservation” Cap — “to tell a lie” Slaps — “to describe something as a hit” Fam — “short for family, similar to ‘bro'” Drip — “to make something fashionable” Airing — “to ignore” In your XXX era — “expressing a chronic feeling or preference that a person has” Mother — “a status symbol for women”
Thankfully, my 11-year-old son keeps me up to date on these slang terms.
