Throwback Thursday: Annual fashion film festival “A Shaded View on Fashion Film” (ASVOFF) has announced the jury and program for its 16th edition, to be held from November 7th to 10th at Dover Street Market Paris .
“This is about us looking forward and looking back at the same time,” said festival founder Diane Pernet. Last year, ASVOFF was sponsored by the French Ministry of Culture.
Who better to traverse past, present, and future than Owenscope co-founder and artist Michel Lamy? Ramey will head the 2024 jury, which will be made up of people from a wide range of fields, including Swedish singer-songwriter JJ Johansson and German costume designer Bina Daigeler. , hair and visual artist Bob Lecine and “Twin Peaks” actor Harry Gores.
More than 155 films will be screened over four days, including 31 films that are in this year’s official competition. A further 81 films will be screened across eight categories, from mental health and the black spectrum in fashion to Chinese fashion films and climate action for kids and teens.
The program begins with an afternoon dedicated to the pre-smartphone era.
It’s Not In Your Phone, by engineer-turned-performer Thomas Dupal, reflects the influence of technology by combining poetry, dance, and emotional expression. There will also be a screening of the 2002 documentary series Fashioned Out by festival founder Diane Pernet and Disciple Films.

Commissioned by French department store Galeries Lafayette, it recreates fashions seen in New York, London, Milan and Paris 22 years ago.
Among the documentaries to be screened this year are “Quant,” a tribute to the late British fashion designer Mary Quant, who passed away in 2023, “Sex and the City,” “The Devil Wears Prada” and “The Devil Wears Prada.” Season 1 of Emily in Paris.
In addition to the screenings, there will also be a talk on image and identity by artistic duo Fecal Matter, and a session on regenerative agriculture in the textile supply chain.
A separate panel discussion will explore how designers and artists can foster change through their cultural contributions. Graham Taber, head of knitwear and strategic advisor for sustainable supply chain solutions at Thom Browne, joins us. Bottega Veneta’s Head of Sustainability Ioan Regent and Film Director Curtis Essel.
The main new development for this edition is the support of UK-based entertainment finance company Goldfinch and Dreamtown production company.
They will sponsor the Goldfinch Writers’ Prize, which aims to foster new voices in film by providing mentorship, project development and a €1,000 purse. The Dreamtown Innovator Award aims to provide comprehensive project support, industry mentorship and show opportunities to turn short films into feature films, and also offers a cash prize of €1,000.
As is tradition, New York-based artist and designer Miguel Villalobos designed the trophy, but this year the grand prize gong was crafted in bronze by jewelry artist Chloe Valorso.
Over 20 prizes will be awarded, including the grand prize. A gong will also be awarded to the best work in each theme curation.
The closing ceremony will be introduced by Serge Carrera, Director of the Emerging Brands Initiative at the Federation of Haute Couture and Fashion, and will include a 51-minute screening of the Paris edition of the documentary Fashioned Out.
