A few years ago, I found the perfect leather jacket in a charity shop in Cambridge. It was a very lucky find and has become one of my favourite pieces. My attachment to this jacket led me to think about the growing popularity of leather in the fashion industry and the serious issues that use of real leather raises. Leather jackets have become a staple and it’s rare to meet someone who doesn’t have at least one. However, clothing derived from animals such as fur and leather raises ethical and environmental issues. It’s important to consider the move away from…

Fashion historian and brand consultant Shelby Ivey Christie joined host David Brancaccio…

Recently, I have been outraged on a daily basis by the blatant racial insensitivity, the apparent lack of diverse staff, and the lack of awareness of how systemic racism impacts every aspect of our lives. During our collective confrontation with police brutality and systemic racism, the fashion industry has had to reflect on the need to make serious changes to the industry. Of course, change is happening, but as consumers, we can help move this movement forward by taking a step back and reflecting on how we are contributing.Of course, we can’t control what designers send down the runway. And…
