Courtesy of Getty Images Recent events, some celebratory and some saddening, like Mary J. Blige’s birthday and the passing of André Leon Talley have led us to reflect on the true individuality embodied through their personal style, but those same events also moved us to think about if such originality still exists today. In this article, we explore aspects of Black culture as they relate to fashion. We look at Black queer fashion pioneers and how their lives, struggles, and desire to make an impact have shaped what it means to be queer in the fashion world, and what it means to be LGBTQ+ in BIPOC spaces. In my opinion, this equates to reaching influencer status. And as an influencer, being able to inspire others to find their own style while remaining true to themselves is the ultimate goal. We often come across Black fashion influencers who do just that, easily standing out with their looks. Whether you’re always in need of quick outfit inspiration, curious about creative ways to style basic items, or simply enjoy watching well-dressed fashionistas at work, Black Style is always…

Wearable art is not new, it has become a normal thing for black people in New York, especially in Harlem – a lifestyle. 55 years ago, the Harlem Fashion Institute (HIF) was founded by Lois K. Alexander Lane, and a few years later the institute organized its own fashion shows during Harlem Week. These shows ran from 1979 to 1996, but the spirit and style seen on these streets never ended. Today, the exhibition “Showing Out: Fashion in Harlem” at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library pays tribute to the legendary art…
