(WKBN) — It’s that time of year again when back-to-school shopping begins.

But this year, prices have come down a little.

So what shopping trends are experts watching, and how can you ease the financial strain?

If you haven’t started your back to school shopping yet, now is the time to start.

Getting children ready for the new school year can cost families hundreds of dollars each year.

Shopping experts say the best way to save money is to shop when there are sales and limit your purchases.

According to the National Retail Federation, the average family will spend about $875 on back-to-school supplies this coming school year.

That’s a significant amount, but prices are trending down compared to last year, when Americans spent a whopping $41.5 billion on them in 2023, according to the group.

This year, the organization expects total back-to-school spending to hit $38.8 billion and for families to make some savings, but how are families making these purchases?

Some of the items that place the greatest strain on households include electrical appliances and clothing.

According to a NerdWallet survey, most people do their best to avoid debt, even turning to buy now, pay later services.

Experts say the best way to save money is to make a list and shop early.

The Better Business Bureau suggests that teams buy items like hand sanitizer and tissues in bulk, if possible.

Ohio’s Tax Free Shopping Week starts Tuesday, which could mean some stores offering local sales.

When preparing to go shopping, experts say you should compare prices between stores to see where you can get the best deal, which might mean shopping in different places.
