BAY RIDGE — On the morning of July 15, one of Brooklyn’s largest NORCs (naturally occurring retirement communities) held its first annual Summer Volunteer Fair.
The event was hosted by Bay Ridge Center (BRC), a 21,000-square-foot facility that offers a wide range of innovative, free services addressing the biological, psychological, social and cultural needs of older adults.
BRC Director of Outreach and Strategic Planning Amed Al-Farij described it as a cross-marketing event, introducing the centre as well as 15 other agencies hoping to make their presence known.
Supporting organizations included the American Red Cross of Greater New York, AmeriCorps Seniors, New York Animal Shelter, Brooklyn Public Library (Senior Services), Brooklyn Veterans Administration Hospital, Campaign to End Hunger, EZ Ridge Pharmacy, The Healing Center, Healthix, New York Police Department (68th Precinct), New York State Action Council on Seniors, NYU Langone, READ 718, Reading Partners and the USO.
There were about 100 attendees at the fair.
A mind with a vision is a dream with a mission
“I love working with seniors and I really care about our mission,” Al-Farij explains. “I really enjoy my job.”
“The fair was to introduce these vendors to the center, show them what we do for the senior community and let them know what they can do for us and our members,” he added.
