Beach Days, Fashion Finds, and Weekend Musings

As moms, we all have superpowers. Mine is the ability to stand on the shore and “lifeguard” my boys while they surf…for hours. When my boys were little (and for me, surfing was sometimes too dangerous) I looked forward to the day when I could sit on the beach and read a book.

Technically, I am here. My boys are good swimmers and we surf together almost all the time, and they’re both bigger than me. I can, and sometimes I do, sit on the beach and read my Kindle.

But sometimes I get a little nervous because my whole world is floating on the board, and I can feel the time passing by so quickly, and there are only a few more days left when both my boys are home and both belong to me.

So I put my Kindle down, got up, and watched.

I wonder if they will ever realize how much my eyes are absorbing them. Looking out from the shore, I am exactly where I want to be, and if there are any regrets in life, this time spent simply looking will never be one of them.

To try or not? I always forget how amazing Vince’s dresses are because they always look so… sad on the models. And I’m bummed that this dress sold out so quickly (surprised, even by NSale standards, because they usually sell for much longer). And if they still have your size left, this is really great. Anyway, should I try this? At first I decided not to because it seemed kind of… boring, but honestly Vince’s dresses always look like this when I see them on models and on hangers. What do you think? Does anyone have one?

Which reminds me… is Nordstrom kidding us? Sure, it was a blur last week, but I swear these moto boots (Vince, waterproof La Canadienne) weren’t originally in this NSale, and I don’t remember seeing this ridiculously chic, designer-inspired coat. Am I going crazy?

Okay, GAP. My favorite jeans right now are these Reformation jeans. The reason is that this belt is so cool and it eliminates the “I’m wearing a giant leather belt” vibe that basically all belts give off. GAP seems to be getting better and better, and they totally do that with these jeans (“Dark Indigo”). And!!?? These high rise cargo pants. These jeans also have a matching belt and look really premium.

It’s Prada-ish. Honestly, I think Prada copied Birkenstock first (even the black)… but then Birkenstock dropped the St. Barthélemy style, so I think they’re better. Really very good.

Apparently I love green sneakers because when I see these my head immediately goes wild.

A name to know: Jane Post. I ordered this leopard raincoat during the last Saks sale and wowed everyone when it arrived. Perfect tailoring and really high-end details. It *almost* resembles an old-fashioned rubber raincoat, but this coat is actually so much softer and super comfortable (even next to the skin). I immediately thought, “Who is Jane Post?”. After researching, I found out that Jane and her husband used to design raincoats under a label called “Drizzle” (in the 1970s). Anyway, the story goes that Jane’s first husband passed away, Drizzle closed, and a few years later, the CEO of Saks personally contacted her and asked her to design their own Saks in-house label, because there was nothing like the original Drizzle raincoat on the market at the time. And thus the Jane Post raincoat was born. Today, the brand is stocked at Saks and many other places, but you can clearly see its vintage roots. I’m now a big fan. You can see her entire line at Saks, and this bright and cheerful raincoat is actually for sale.

Even Jane (the other Jane) agrees. There’s something about this straw bag (under $40!) that keeps me coming back for more. It’s perfectly shaped and Jane Birken-esque. Sure, it’s not for travel, but it’s great for everyday use and looks a lot more expensive than it actually is.

Certified. We’re going to Greece in a few weeks, and one of the dresses I’m definitely packing is this romantic white dress from Reformation. I needed the hem to be lifted a little on the shoulders (thanks to my mastectomy, my “girls” are defying gravity), and Jeni was kind enough to quickly fix it. Jeni has a degree in fashion design, and her skill with a sewing machine is one of the (many!!) perks of knowing her. Anyway, Jeni delivered the finished dress this morning, and I was ecstatic about the tailoring. “It’s so amazing, I could write poetry about it,” she enthused. Wow. I thought the Ref dress was exceptionally well made, but to have someone like Jeni sigh with dreaminess? Seriously, rave reviews. I think it runs a little large. I’m usually a size 6, but I’m a size 4 (and maybe I’ve lost a little weight, so maybe TTS).

Wow. These…ballet flats (??) might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. (Check out the source for other sizes.)

For Plus Size Girls: I was blown away by this denim dress, it’s similar to Cinq A Sept but it’s under $140.

The most perfect work shirt, one that you can literally wear in any season from now until forever, is this shirt from Equipment. Oh, and sizes are likely to sell out fast, but Saks still has it in stock (and it’s also part of their current promotion).

Calling all girls who wear hair ties around their wrists! Best friends: I know there are a ton of companies out there that try really hard to make hair ties look like bracelets, and I’ve basically tried them all. Most of the time, they’re not comfortable, don’t work all that well as hair ties, or are just…not cute…but the K’lani Hair Tie Bracelets have completely (!!) changed that. First off, this set is so incredibly cute I keep getting compliments on them, and they actually work as hair ties. They also come in all sizes (I know!!) and are actually comfortable to wear. I have the medium “Focus” from this exact set, and I plan on buying many more.

Have a nice weekend!

kiss,

vinegar
