Like many basic pieces of workwear, the barn jacket has evolved beyond its original purpose at the time. In other words, it’s gone off the farm and become a stylish fall staple that can be worn anywhere. The best barn jackets for women, including top picks from Everlane, LLBean, and J.Crew, feature the rustic, utilitarian details you’ve come to expect: wide front flap pockets, corduroy collars, durable canvas exteriors, and flannel. lining, etc.) are all combined. Modern, updated fit and attractive colors.

Stylistically, barn jackets are similar to chore coats, but they tend to be less boxy and better insulated for colder days. These are basic pieces, for example Alex Mill and Buck Mason picks, which can be a little pricier, but you’ll get quality materials and top-notch craftsmanship. (For affordable alternatives, we like Dickies and Quince.) Coming up are all the best barn jackets for women, including timeless classics and the latest new arrivals.

Editor’s recommendations at a glance

Hailing from chilly Maine, LLBean makes truly authentic barn coats that hold up well in cold weather year-round. This best-selling pick is lined with flannel and is already broken in, giving it a soft, vintage feel from the first time you wear it. Wear it for apple picking, tailgating, or other fall-themed activities.

For something less rugged and more sophisticated, Everlane’s Barn Jacket is a stylish option. Featuring front flap pockets, a corduroy collar and organic cotton canvas. There’s no lining, so it won’t be very warm on chilly days, but it’s perfect for changing seasons or layering.

It’s hard to think of barn jackets without mentioning J.Crew, the brand that brought utilitarian style to the fashion arena decades ago. This version is a new twist on the original 1983 design that made the coat a hit. It retains the traditional details (corduroy collar, large patch pockets, relaxed fit), but the midi length adds warmth and coverage on cold, rainy days. It also comes with a removable vest that you can layer underneath when the temperatures start to drop.

Abercrombie changed things up by replacing the traditional corduroy color with a faux brown leather color, but otherwise this twill jacket features a button-up front, quilted inner lining, and generously oversized It has all the hallmarks of a classic barn jacket, including pockets. Plus, it’s available in three neutral shades: toasted taupe, olive, and cream. The jacket runs a little large, but reviewers seem to like it and wouldn’t recommend sizing down.

It’s no surprise that Orvis, known for its hunting and fishing apparel, decided to collaborate with Barbour, which has been making weather-resistant waxed cotton jackets since 1894. Inspired by Barbour’s original fly fishing wading jacket, the Sprey, this barn jacket features a pop of contrast. Orange, tartan lining, zip front with snap storm flap and four large pockets.

Barbour Navy Beadnell Wax Jacket

This jacket is similar to the Barbour above, but the cut is slimmer, giving the jacket a slightly dressier look. It’s lined in Barbour tartan and has moleskin-lined handwarmer pockets. For extra warmth, wear a zip-in liner. For a chic look, try a cropped version of this classic coat.

I recently purchased this chore coat. It has all the important details of a barn jacket, including a durable exterior, cozy lining, relaxed fit, and snap front closure. Unsurprisingly, Dickies is a staple of modern workwear, and having tested several items myself over the years, their construction is excellent. Another great thing: the prices are reasonable. This coat is a little larger, which is just my preference, and it has slip-in hand pockets to keep me warm.

Quince is an editor favorite for affordable basics, and their chore jackets are on trend for fall. This pick hits the hips, giving it a slightly more fitted and shorter look, perfect for pairing with high-waisted jeans or skirts.

Inspired by Mango’s barn jackets, the hoodie is lined with flannel for a preppy-chic effect and finished with a contrasting corduroy collar. The waxy front has both snap buttons and a hidden zipper for two ways to stay warm, plus side pockets for your phone or keys.

Barn jackets are at their best after a few years of wear. It has the well-worn feel of a beloved favorite. Already broken in, the Alex Mill jacket has a slightly bearded look and has a relaxed, relaxed fit that pairs perfectly with jeans or slim trousers.

Barn jackets are quite expensive, but this option from Old Navy is very affordable. The material is contemporary denim rather than classic cotton twill or canvas, but it has the same relaxed fit, patch pockets, and traditional collar as the Barn Jacket.

Buck Mason’s canvas work jackets feature all sorts of thoughtful details that give them an understated yet classy look. Featuring corduroy facings on the collar and cuffs, dual entry pockets, and a vintage garment wash effect created by a natural enzyme rinse.

Featuring a relaxed fit, dropped shoulders and a pointed faux leather collar, Rag & Bone’s Barn Jacket gets a fashionable upgrade. Made from 100% medium weight cotton, it has pockets on both the chest and hips. Although expensive, Rag & Bone pieces tend to stay in your closet because their sleek designs last for years.

This diamond-quilted barn jacket has chic faux leather details (note the buckled side tabs) and is lined with velboa to keep you warm on fall days. . Featuring a classic spread collar, zip front with snap storm placket and front patch pocket for essentials.

This cotton/polyester jacket has a waxed finish and features a contrasting corduroy collar, snap buttons and pockets. It looks a bit like Barbour, but costs a fraction of the price. We love the rich brown color and the loose fit is perfect for layering over a cozy turtleneck sweater on chilly days.

Velvet Oakley Barn Jacket

What stands out about the velvet barn jacket is the chocolate brown corduroy trim on the front patch pockets, which matches the jacket’s corduroy collar. The mid-weight cotton twill fabric has a relaxed, casual look, but the jacket runs a little large, so you may want to consider sizing down.

Toteme’s Barn Jacket is more expensive than others, but its stylish oversized fit and elegant details (like the matching corduroy elbow patch on the collar) make it worth the investment. You’ll also be happy with the fact that it’s made from waxed organic cotton and that at least 50% of the jacket is made of low-impact materials.

When stylish women are looking for well-crafted, elevated basics (like barn jackets), they turn to this popular French brand. Sézane’s barn jacket is made from soft quilted velvet with a boxy barn jacket cut and large side pockets. The oversized fit is perfect for layering, and the jacket can be dressed up or down.

UK-based Me & Em collaborated with Millerain, a company that has been making outerwear textiles since 1880, to create this chic barn jacket. Made from water-resistant waxed cotton, it features a trendy oversized fit, corduroy collar and cuffs, and large flap patch pockets. Although expensive, the quality and craftsmanship are excellent.

This reversible quilted barn jacket is like two jackets in one. When inverted, the Ivory Pearl (shown above) becomes a rich shade of honey beige. Water-resistant on both sides, the jacket is lightweight yet comfortable enough to wear on cooler days. This jacket has a slightly more fitted fit than the oversized jackets on this list, giving it a flattering silhouette.

ZARA is known for affordable, straight-from-the-runway looks. The company’s Barn Jacket is boxy, slightly cropped, and has an oversized fleece collar and fleece lining. The lining is made from recycled polyester, and the outer shell is made from 35% recycled cotton and 65% recycled polyester. This jacket may not be as high quality and durable as some of the waxed versions on this list, but it’s a stylish option that will last several seasons.

I love that this quilted barn jacket comes in four pretty fall colors (including the deep moss above) and a wide range of sizes (miss, petite, plus, plus petite). Featuring stylish details such as contrast trim and gold buttons, the jacket fits snugly at the hips for a sophisticated look.

Citizen of Humanity Keenan Cropped Barn Jacket

Part barn jacket, part trench coat, Citizen of Humanity’s Keenan style is cropped and belted for a flattering fit. Made from cotton with a touch of elastane for stretch, it has a classic corduroy collar and an off-center button front. It’s expensive at $835, but it certainly makes a statement.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Will burn coats be popular in 2024?

Not only are these in style, they’re the biggest jacket trend for fall 2024. These jackets originated in France in the 19th century and were primarily worn by farmers and manual workers, but have since evolved into a functional yet fashionable style. It’s an outerwear piece that looks equally good over flannel, jeans, or a dress. Now worn by everyone from fly fishers to farmers to fashion influencers.

Why is it called a burn jacket?

It was originally worn by farmers, hence the name “barn jacket”. A weather-resistant outer shell and deep pockets were useful when working in the field or feeding chickens and livestock.

These are considered mid-weight fall jackets to wear on cool (but not frigid) days. However, some barn jackets are lined with fleece, faux fur, flannel, or even quilted for extra warmth. Some, like the J.Crew Long Barn Jacket, have a removable liner for added insulation.
