In terms of top-notch glitz and glamour, the 2024 Olympics are off to a strong start.
On Friday, the Olympic opening ceremony gave audiences a major gift with performances from Celine Dion, Lady Gaga and a headless Marie Antoinette, and an opportunity to think: What could be better than this? And we better not mention actual sports, because Beyoncé…Beyoncé is the answer to that question.
In the roughly two-minute, 30-second clip that circulated on social media on Saturday, Mrs. Carter remixes her single “YA YA” from her album “Cowboy Carter,” and is joined by Simone Biles and other members of the women’s and men’s gymnastics teams to introduce the 2024 U.S. Olympic team athletes in her own inimitable way.
“Welcome to the 2024 Summer Olympics!” Beyoncé says in the video, clad in her now-standard stars and stripes outfit complete with a patriotic cowboy hat.
“That pride and joy, that’s what this team is about,” she said, naming this year’s top stars in each sport. “And that’s why I believe in this team, and that’s why I can’t wait to see what they accomplish over the next 16 days. And so, America, let’s applaud Team USA for being the very best we are.”
As People Magazine highlighted in its coverage of the video, Team USA’s Instagram account dubbed the surprise introduction “#Baylympics.”
