The Brazilian government has announced plans to invest 41.2 billion reais (US$7.35 billion) in urban projects as part of the PAC program.
Investments will be made in urban transportation, drainage, water supply and sewerage, with funding provided by the Federal Government and the Workers’ Compensation Guaranty Fund (FGTS).
In total, 872 proposals from 707 municipalities were selected, which are expected to create more than 535,000 jobs.
“This is a major role for the new PAC – creating jobs and incomes and revitalizing Brazil’s economy,” Urban Affairs Minister Jadel Filho said in a statement.
Of the total, R$ 9.9 billion will be allocated to urban transport projects in medium and large cities, benefiting 58 municipalities in 24 states.
These projects include expansions and upgrades to public transportation systems, including subways, urban rail and light rail services, bus routes and dedicated lanes. The investments aim to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable urban and economic development. “These investments will prepare our cities to rise to the challenges of climate change,” Philo said.
15.3 billion reais will be spent on urban drainage in 190 municipalities, while 6.5 billion reais will go to Rio Grande do Sul state, which was hit by unprecedented floods in May. Around 4 million people will directly benefit from these projects, which aim to reduce the risk and impact of natural disasters.
Meanwhile, drinking water projects will receive 5.9 billion reais in 300 municipalities in 24 provinces, while sewerage projects will receive 10.1 billion reais in 287 municipalities in 25 provinces.
