Breaking Boundaries with Gender-Free Fashion: The Story of Stuzo Clothing

ThePrideStore.com is an LGBTQ owned and operated e-commerce platform in partnership with equalpride, the parent company of Pride.com, offering a curated and ever-evolving selection of products sourced from businesses owned, operated or founded by members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community.

On the bustling streets of New York City, the pulse of Stuzo Clothing resonates with a vibrant spirit of inclusivity and self-expression. Founded by visionary Stoney Micheli-Love, Stuzo is more than just a fashion brand; it’s a sanctuary where all people can find solace from criticism and labels. And as Women’s History Month draws to a close, it turns out that honoring the women who came before us and creating gender-neutral apparel go hand in hand.

“Live Your Truth” t-shirts by Stuzo Clothing are available for purchase at ThePrideStore.com.

With a mission to challenge societal norms, Stuzo Clothing embraces the concept of gender-free clothing, or as Stoney affectionately calls it, “clothes without organs.” In a recent interview, Stoney spoke about the birth of Stuzo: “In 2008, I was in my final year of studying graphic design in the Bronx, and I encountered homophobia, racism and sexism. That was the source of inspiration.”

Stoney’s personal experiences with prejudice were the driving force behind the creation of Stuzo, a brand that champions diversity and authenticity. “My shopping experiences were gendered and alienating,” she recalls. “Shopping in a space where there was no middle ground was frustrating.”

At the heart of Stuzos philosophy is an organic creative process, which mirrors Stoney’s commitment to authenticity and fluidity. “My creative process is organic; it comes to me,” she explains. “I’m inspired by everything.”

Stoney draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including royalty and reality TV, to create designs that resonate with the bold and unconventional. “I let things speak to me and inspire me in my life,” she adds.

But Stutzo’s journey has not been without its bumps. Stoney recalls the pivotal moment when, after a period of self-reflection, she redefined the brand as gender-free. “I had to take a step back and really look at myself,” she says. “After this realization, Stutzo became a gender-free company again.”

The “FemBoi” tank top by Stuzo Clothing is available to purchase at ThePrideStore.com.

Stoney acknowledges the transformative power of embracing her truth as she journeys through personal and professional growth. “It took a lot of unpacking, learning, relearning, and re-empowering,” she declares. “But coming back to my truth and my values has ultimately made me a better businessman, and I’m grateful for that.”

As Women’s History Month progresses, Stoney reflects on its importance to Stuzos and herself: “It’s about honoring the women who came before us and fought for equal rights. It’s about honoring the women who continue to fight alongside us now, fighting for just being themselves. And it’s about honoring the young people of the future who will lead the charge and fight for balance in humanity.”

Through Stuzo Clothing, Stoney Michelli Love embodies the resilience and creativity of female entrepreneurs, inspiring them to embrace their true selves and rewrite the fashion narrative.
