“Operation Yellow Jacket is a collaboration between the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania State Police and focuses on ‘lane changing techniques.'”
The National Guard will be enforcing the law along Interstate 95 and Interstate 295 throughout Bucks County.
The state’s “lane change law” requires drivers to change lanes when approaching or passing through an emergency response area.
Unless instructed by emergency services responders, motorists should safely merge into a lane that is not adjacent to an emergency response area, if possible. Those who are unable to change lanes should slow down to no more than 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
Emergency response areas are areas where police or emergency vehicles have their lights flashing, or where road crews or emergency responders have flares, caution signs, or other traffic control devices.
“Move Over” also applies to tow trucks providing roadside assistance and to disabled vehicles that have at least two emergency indicators. Emergency indicators include the vehicle’s hazard lights, caution signs, other traffic control devices, and road flares.
“Move Over” imposes fines of up to $500 for first-time offenders, and the law doubles the fine for subsequent offenses.
When emergency personnel arrived on scene, multiple traffic violations were reported.
Patrol units from Troops M, K and T will assist in this effort.
