CAMP Rehoboth is partnering with Yale University to increase the number of LGBTQ+-affirming mental health providers available to all ages in Sussex County and throughout Delaware. CAMP Rehoboth and the Yale LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative collaborated with CenterLink to facilitate a 12-session LGBTQ+ affirmative cognitive behavioral therapy training program.
The sessions were led by expert trainers from Yale University. All are licensed psychologists and nationally recognized developers of LGBTQ-affirming CBT education. With the training completed, CAMP Rehoboth now has a longer referral list of LGBTQ+-affirming mental health providers who serve the LGBTQ+ community.
One of those providers is Dr. Wendi Schirvar, a licensed clinical psychologist with Beebe Medical Group and core faculty member of the Beebe Graduate Medical Education-Family Medicine Training Program. “People who identify with the LGBTQ+ population face challenges that the general population does not experience,” Silver said. “In many cases, their experiences have historical significance before they come out and can lead to undiagnosed mental health issues and, as a result, treatment by others.Health and Mental Health By helping people understand the many psychosocial variables that influence their outcomes, they can better decide on areas of focus.”
The Yale LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative is housed within the Yale School of Public Health and the Yale School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and leverages Yale’s interdisciplinary expertise to further its mission. This initiative provides a home for scholars and scholarship dedicated to understanding and improving the mental health of LGBTQ populations in the United States and around the world. Part of its mission is carried out by training and educating future diverse leaders in LGBTQ mental health research.
“CAMP Rehoboth is thrilled to have CAMP Rehoboth,” said Dr. Kim Leisey, Executive Director of CAMP Rehoboth. “Our entire community will benefit from their efforts going forward. We also appreciate the partnership between CenterLink and Yale University.”
