The Master’s degree in Urban Planning trains students to be leaders and innovators in all aspects of urban planning. Students learn traditional elements of urban planning while immersing themselves in innovative and new themes. Students will learn how to create prescriptive approaches to social justice, equity, and inclusion in planning practice, data resources, visualization techniques to transform cities, and place-based approaches to society’s most pressing problems. Students can also pursue one of 11 dual degrees in areas such as architecture, landscape architecture, public health, public administration, public policy, and real estate development.

Students choose from six available concentrations appropriate to their interests in the planning field. This intensive course includes a 4-credit gateway course, a 4-credit methodology course, and two elective courses.

To earn the Master of Urban Planning degree, students must complete 48 credits consisting of core courses, concentration courses, planning studios, capstone courses, and elective courses. In addition, students pursuing the Master of Urban Planning degree must complete a 400-hour internship of at least 10 weeks duration with an organization engaged in planning or closely related activities.

Concentration (16 units):
Six concentrations are available in the Urban Planning Master’s program. Each concentration has eight credits of required gateway and methods courses, and students choose eight credits of electives for the concentration.
Planning studio (4 units):
The Planning Studio is an integral part of the Price School of Public Policy curriculum and provides an important pedagogical link between academic education and preparation for professional practice. The Planning Studio requires students to apply their individual abilities and knowledge to common real-world problems and learn to work together as a team to produce professional projects. Students must complete 4 units of Planning Studio.
Capstone (4 units):
All Master of Urban Planning students are required to complete PPD 629 Capstone (4 credits) in Urban Planning.
