The Death by Denim Fashion Show held Saturday night at Martin Funeral Home, 1460 George Dieter Drive in East El Paso, turned the funeral home into an unlikely place of celebration, beauty and imagination. .
The event was coordinated by Janace Walker, aka JunkDredz. In addition to being a fashion designer, Walker is a children’s book author and founder of the El Paso Black Arts Association.
Walker is also the owner of the JunkApproved clothing brand.
The fashion show was held in a large chapel, with music provided by DJ Death by Noize, and the crowd was vibrant throughout the night.
The show also recognized the efforts of El Paso Community College fashion students and faculty.
The four fashion collections featured the work of several designers, with short breaks between each collection. Music, fashion, models and the audience came together to create a mesmerizing experience, and the emotional excitement was sure to leave the audience with a new understanding of what a funeral director is all about.
The denim used in the show was donated to the designer, and speakers said the event held at the funeral home helped symbolize the transformative nature of life, when it becomes something new. I was paying attention to the relationship with denim.
Tickets for this extravagant event have been sold out for quite some time, according to the organizers, who say they are using denim as a “powerful metaphor for how we can repurpose our experiences into something even more valuable, He said that he sought a “journey of transformation.”
