Diablo Cody has completed the script for the 9 to 5 remake.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at Comic-Con 2024 on Friday, the filmmaker spoke about the differences between her version and the 1980 classic that starred Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. A remake to be produced by Jennifer Aniston is still in development.
“What was really interesting to me is that the original film was so focused on the conflict between the sexes and the corporate world,” Cody said, “and to me, most of the conflict seems to be generational — for example, Gen Z versus Baby Boomers in the workplace. And now we have a generation emerging that has learned to draw boundaries, which is actually, surprisingly, a new development.”
She added: “There’s a whole other generation of people in the corporate world who are being told to hold on. So there’s definitely a culture clash there, and I thought, ‘Oh, this would be perfect for a comedy.'”
The film still has a long way to go.
“We haven’t even cast the film yet, but it feels like we’re moving forward. It’s been really exciting work,” Cody said.
One member of the original cast has already spoken out about the new version: in May, Lily Tomlin claimed the original stars turned it down.
“We only worked officially on the script once,” Tomlin told People magazine in an interview. “The draft didn’t work out for us. We didn’t really get to see the world of work as it is today. [in the pages]People are working from home. They’re doing gig work. They don’t even know their bosses. They’re at home!”
