Los Angeles-based outerwear brand AETHER has collaborated with Leica to create the Reporter Jacket, a clothing item made from water-repellent waxed cotton. “It’s built to carry all the essentials you need for a day in the field.”
This product was designed with the guidance and input of four Leica camera ambassadors: Mathieu Bitton, Ragnar Axelsson, Sheila Crowell and Misan Harriman. Each photographer used their experience and expertise to create a jacket that celebrates each photographer’s artistry and dedication to their craft.
At $795, what exactly is included in this photographer’s jacket that makes it so sought after in the field?
There are strategically placed vents for ventilation as well as multiple uses for carrying the kit. There’s an internal pocket designed to hold up to 4 batteries, a large soft-lined pocket for the camera body and lens, a hidden SD card pocket in the collar, and an internal chest pocket for an SD card case.

It also features an extra-large pocket on the back designed to hold a tablet or extra gear, and a convenient removable microfiber cleaning cloth.
It’s practical and looks pretty good, but I’m not convinced. The image of the SD card pocket in the collar that was sent to me doesn’t look secure at all, but I can’t see how you can justify a $795 price tag for what is essentially a jacket with pockets.
Despite Cira Crowell’s opinion, this product appears to be entirely made for and marketed to men. Because who could be cruel enough to take away from us all the handbags we need?

Even if a women’s version is in development, the press release doesn’t mention it, making Crowell’s opinion feel like virtue-signalling, and the design is pretty short-sighted in this day and age.
Bitton said:
“Finally, having the ultimate jacket with pockets to carry what you need to work anywhere in the world, under any conditions, is a big deal for me and for photography enthusiasts. Working with AETHER was a very rewarding experience as they truly understand apparel that is not only beautiful to look at, but also extremely useful and of the highest quality possible. It’s the perfect companion to my camera collection and a tool I use on every trip.
In any case, the Leica x Aether collaboration was only supposed to produce 125 jackets, but it appears they’ve all sold out already.
