Transphobic billionaire Elon Musk recently said his transgender daughter was “killed” by the “woke mind virus” and vowed to “eradicate” it. Musk made the comments during a now-viral interview with far-right psychologist Jordan Peterson.
“I lost my son. There’s a reason it’s called deadnaming. It’s called deadnaming because my son is dead. My son [Vivian] “I vowed to eradicate the ‘awakened mind’ virus, and we are making progress,” he said, deadnaming his daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson.

“I was made to sign paperwork for one of my older sons, when I didn’t really understand what was going on, and COVID-19 was going on at the time, so there was a lot of confusion,” Musk said, referring to Vivian by the wrong gender and name. [Vivian] I might commit suicide.”
Vivian Jenna Wilson previously cut ties with Musk and changed her legal name and gender in 2022. She is the daughter of Canadian author Justin Wilson, who divorced Musk in 2008.
Vivienne reportedly disliked Musk and cut him off, and according to Musk’s biography, he became violently hostile towards transgender people after his transgender daughter disowned him.
After Peterson went on a lengthy rant spreading misinformation about the current state of gender-affirming care, which scientists have touted as safe and evidence-based for minors, Musk said, “I agree with you that this is an incredibly evil practice and the people who promote it should go to jail.”
Musk continued his X-rated tirade, again calling Vivienne by her deadname and claiming that she was actually “gay and a little autistic” because of her interest in fashion and acting from a young age. LGBTQ Nation has posted a censored version of the post that does not include her deadname.

Users were quick to criticize Musk’s approach.
Transgender YouTuber Natalie Winn said of Musk’s transphobia, “He claims he was deceived by doctors, but this is not about him regretting his gender transition. His daughter has not reversed her gender transition. He is upset that his child is a transgender woman and emotionally considers her to be dead.”

Wynn also pointed out that Musk claims his daughter is taking puberty suppressants, which is impossible since she is 16. Wynn suggested that Musk is either confused or lying.
Also, his daughter was 16 when she transitioned, so it’s highly likely she was never on puberty suppressants. Elon either doesn’t know the difference between puberty suppressants and HRT, or he’s lying.

“We’ve met countless fathers who have put their love for their trans children above their own politics, and we’ve also met countless trans people who don’t speak to their fathers because they’re unwilling or unable to do the same,” said Jillian Branstetter, communications strategist for the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project and LGBTQ & HIV Project. “The problem is, kids aren’t infected with a mind virus.”

Branstetter then continued the thread by criticizing Musk for disowning his daughter instead of accepting the person she has become. Branstetter concluded by quoting a Heidi Prieve poem: “To love someone long is to attend a thousand funerals for who they once were.”
The “Dead” in “Deadname” isn’t a person, it’s a role that trans people were expected to play. Beneath every assumption we have about a person there is an actual person, and I think most parents know that no matter who their child is, those assumptions will be challenged many times over.
