If you’re a woman over 40 with skin, you know how hard it can be to find a good foundation that works with your skin, rather than not matching it.
We all know that as we age, our skin dries out and loses the beautiful tone and texture it had in our 20s, and that’s totally normal, which means that when it comes to foundation, there are probably better options out there to keep your skin healthy and dewy.
But with so many different formulas out there, it can be really hard to know which one is best for you – that’s why we’re here!
Check it out: See what happened when I tried out the 10-pump foundation hack: Post continues below.
That’s because, on a recent episode of the You Beauty podcast, a lovely listener named Sharon asked for advice on the best makeup for over 40 skin.
She said: “I’m 46 and I consider my skin combination, but I’m starting to think that maybe I just have oily skin. The problem is that by mid-morning my skin is oily and shiny and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Is my foundation too oily or do I need a setting powder? Please help!”
And our friend Lee Campbell made it happen.
“I once worked with a beautiful girl at Cosmo, and she was always saying, ‘My skin is so oily!’ and wearing all kinds of matte makeup products. One time I went into the bathroom, and she was about to go to an event, and she was washing her face with a bar of soap (like a magazine reporter would do). She said that’s the only thing that gets rid of the oil.”
It’s not soap.
“I’m not saying Sharon does this, but I’d love to know what her skin care routine is because I think that’s key. It seems like she’s trying to deal with her oily skin, but it’s super dry. I have combination skin too and I hate the oily areas so I used to do things like this,” Lee continued.
“I wanted dewy skin but didn’t want it to be shiny, so I used all the mattifying stuff. Now I use essences, lotions and oils. It sounds scary, but it’s great for moisturizing.”

The result is less oily looking residue and happier, more comfortable skin.
As Lee said in the podcast, once you’re over 40, you’re also more likely to be going through menopause, which can really mess with your skin. That means you might suddenly be dealing with redness, sensitivity, worsening acne, and dry skin. Good for you!
What does this mean? You may need to pare back your skincare routine in favor of simple, effective formulas that focus on protecting that all-important barrier and nourishing your skin. In addition to simple cleansing balms, nourishing and hydrating serums, essences, and oils (like the ever-popular jojoba oil), Lee also recommends overhauling your makeup routine. Specifically, swapping out your go-to foundation.
Her recommendation? Affordable drug store picks that are always on sale.
Any guesses?
It’s the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation, $25.99.

“Try Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless,” recommends Lee, explaining that this multitasking formula combines the best of both oily and dry skin types.
“It feels matte, but it’s not matte,” she says. “It’s almost velvety and it’s blurry, which is really beautiful. It doesn’t leave you feeling oily or dry.”
Lee’s list of recommended foundations for mature skin also includes Maybelline SuperStay Skin Tint Foundation ($37.99) (currently on sale for $19 at Chemist Warehouse – what a bargain!).
“It’s a light wash, but it definitely doesn’t come off,” Lee says.
For those of you who aren’t familiar, here it is:

For a more expensive option, Lee also praises Smashbox’s Always-On Skin Balancing Foundation ($75).
“Smashbox’s Always On Foundation is great because it’s designed for oily skin but is clever – it hydrates where your skin needs it and mattifies areas that tend to get oily.”
Read on: It doesn’t mattify dry areas or make your face look even drier.

The website claims the product provides 24-hour hydration and is formulated with adaptogens that “help skin act like an automatic thermostat to maintain a balance between oil and moisture.”
At $75, it’s a lot more expensive than the affordable drugstore products mentioned above, but if you’re looking for a long-lasting product for combination skin, this product fits the bill.
“It has a beautiful satin finish,” Lee added.
So, here it is. If you’ve been looking for a new foundation for ages, hopefully one of these will suit your tastes.
