HOUSTON – Gen Z is on track to be the most alcohol-abstinent generation, and young people are increasingly refraining from drinking, according to a new study.

Health concerns are a major motivator for Gen Z to stay away from drinking, as Gen Z is less interested in binge drinking than Millennials, Gen X, and baby boomers.

This trend has placed Gen Z at the forefront of the “Sober Curious” movement, which encourages reducing or eliminating alcohol intake.

But the survey also found rising levels of marijuana, psychedelic and nicotine use among Gen Z, creating a complex picture of this generation’s approach to substances.

Health-conscious abstinence

Gen Z’s declining interest in alcohol is being driven by health concerns and a preference for “conscious drinking.”

According to AddictionResource.net, research shows that one in three young people choose not to drink alcohol for health reasons, while cost-cutting, addiction concerns, and social Some cite reasons such as the perception that it enhances one’s personal status.

Additionally, marijuana use is on the rise as some people see it as a “safer” alternative to alcohol. In recent years, vaping has tripled among teens and young adults, complicating Gen Z’s overall abstinence trend.

The “Sober Curious” movement gains momentum

Gen Z popularized the “Sober Curiosity” movement, reflecting a shift toward reducing or completely eliminating alcohol intake.

Data shows that 34% of Gen Zers are actively reducing their alcohol intake, and 24% don’t drink at all.

The movement is clearly growing, with one in four Americans now recognizing the term “sober curiosity,” and social media contributing to its growth.

Rise of the sober bar

Non-alcoholic bars are gaining attention nationwide in response to Gen Z’s interest in alcohol alternatives.

These “sober bars” specialize in non-alcoholic beverages, such as mocktails and non-alcoholic beer, with an emphasis on craftsmanship and flavor.

Nearly half of young Americans say they’re interested in visiting a sober bar, and about 40% would like to see more low-alcohol or no-alcohol options.

Health benefits of staying sober

Reducing alcohol intake for Gen Z may have lifelong mental and physical health benefits. Research shows that abstinence from alcohol improves mood, self-esteem, and cognitive function. Health experts also note lower risks of cancer, heart disease, and liver damage, along with benefits like better sleep and healthier skin.

Gen Z drug use status

Gen Z’s approach to alcohol is very different from older generations.

Only 30% of Gen Zers report drinking alcohol weekly, compared to 58% of baby boomers.

While Millennials started the trend of drinking less, Gen Z seems to be taking it even further, with many choosing to quit drinking or avoid alcohol altogether.
