If someone called Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris a “brat,” it might not be an insult.
Amid an outpouring of support for the vice president in the 2024 presidential election on Sunday, he also received high praise from pop star Charli XCX.
“Kamala is a brat,” the British singer-songwriter said in a post to X that quickly went viral.
By midday Monday, the Harris campaign had deployed the meme: An X-Page banner reading “kamala hq” in lowercase letters against a neon green background resembled the cover of Charli XCX’s album “Brat,” which debuted at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 chart last month and prompted many in Gen Z to consider 2024 the “Brat Summer.”
A similar graphic was also posted on Harris’ campaign Instagram account, which is filled with meme images that have become popular among younger generations.
Some in Gen Z have declared this season “Brat Summer.”
The musician told the BBC that a “brat” is someone who is loyal, down-to-earth and has a rebellious side. She said: “You feel like yourself, you might be overwhelmed, but you sort of get over it and party. You’re very honest, very forthright. You’re a bit quirky. You do silly things. But that’s a brat. You’re a brat. That’s a brat.”
Content creators on left-leaning social media told NBC News that Biden’s withdrawal from the race and his endorsement of Harris have reinvigorated them about the Democratic Party and its possibilities. Platforms have seen a flurry of memes featuring Harris, including a coconut tree, that Democrats hope will help mobilize younger voters.
