How sports entered the fashion realm in 2024

There’s no denying that 2024 is the year of sports. From the high-profile Men’s EuroCup to the eternally chic Wimbledon tournament and, of course, the Paris 2024 Olympics, which are well underway, sport has officially become part of our daily lives.

So when sportswear like team football jerseys started appearing on trendy Gen Z moodboards, items like tennis, handball and football sneakers officially became wardrobe staples. At the same time, track pants can be easily styled with kitten heels and blouses at the office or beyond depending on the style set, tennis core has become a trending hashtag across social, and sportswear has officially entered the realm of fashion. It became clear.

But does this trend have any legs? Where did it come from? Are we heading into a fashion space where the lines between athleisure and style become increasingly blurred? If you identify with this trend, how can you wear it in style?

History of sports in fashion

To be clear, this isn’t the first time fashion has taken inspiration from the world of sports.

Equestrian style has long been seen in the collections of luxury designers such as Ralph Lauren and Gucci, with the iconic horsebit motif featured on bags, shoes and suits.

Gucci’s 2021 Aria collection celebrates the brand’s 100th anniversary and features a number of equestrian motifs as a nod to its history.

At Jean Paul Gaultier’s Hermès Fall/Winter 2010 RTW show held in Paris in 2010, models strutted down the runway wearing elegant tennis-inspired wear, including a white Birkin with a ball bag. It was seen.

American football has been interpreted in Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2005 RTW, in Tom Ford’s 2014 sequined football jerseys, and in the ornate shoulder pads of various Thom Browne collections.

Sports in today’s fashion

The past two years have seen a significant increase in the presence of sports motifs across the collections of prominent designers.

In 2022, luxury car brand Ferrari debuted its first runway show, underscoring its commitment to the (very chic) sport of Formula 1 racing. Miu Miu went tennis-core for its AW22 show, while British designer David Koma featured elements of football and rugby in his collection that year.

At Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri featured elements of motocross style in her Fall/Winter 22 collection, and her latest Fall/Winter 2024-2025 haute couture show was particularly inspired by Olympic athletes and track and field, with a focus on women’s sports. There was a floor-to-ceiling mural of the players. The late Faith Ringgold lined up on the runway.

Dior’s 24/25 haute couture collection in Paris was perfectly timed ahead of the Olympics, which served as a source of inspiration.

Zendaya wore a custom Loewe dress embroidered with a tennis player’s image to the Sydney premiere of Challengers.

Perhaps no one is more excited than Jonathan Anderson of Loewe (the hottest brand in Q2 2024, according to The Lyst Index), who was chosen to design the costumes for the viral sexy tennis drama starring fashion darling Zendaya. I don’t think there is anything that resonates with me. The press tour that followed featured a number of tennis-themed outfits curated by Law Roach, which excited the fashion world. Loewe’s collaboration with performance sportswear brand On was a smart move for the luxury brand to move further into the sportswear space.

How do you wear sportswear in street style?

Sportswear has deftly infiltrated the world of street style and high street fashion. Soccer jerseys aren’t just for watching local matches; instead, pair them with minis, low-slung jeans or long, flowing maxi skirts to juxtapose the masculine nature of this item You can see.

Tracksuits elevate the trend with oversized blazers, while soccer shorts and running shorts are paired with lace-up blouses and loafers.
