I’m a high-street-obsessed fashion editor, so I’ve been scouring my favourite stores for the most expensive looking items online.

I’ll be honest, although I love high-end and designer fashion and everything from fashion month to celebrity style, my heart belongs to the high street – apart from the occasional splurge (trust me, it’s a lot), 75% of my wardrobe is bought from the high street, with stores like Mango and Zara making up the largest proportions.

My wardrobe may be on the more budget side, but I still like to appear sophisticated and upscale, so over the years I’ve become an expert at picking outfits that not only look a lot more expensive than they cost, but also that you won’t see anyone else wearing. After all, there’s nothing worse than arriving at the office or a summer wedding to find three people wearing the same blouse, dress, or jumpsuit (a pitfall you’re more likely to fall into when shopping downtown).

The key is to choose premium fabrics, sophisticated silhouettes and exquisite detailing – all of which are now widely available on the high street. But that doesn’t mean you have to stick to minimalism. Understated luxury is certainly one way to go about looking classy, but there are plenty of printed styles that exude a European summer or stumble-in-LA vibe that’s diverse yet luxurious without compromising on fun.

So, without further ado, here’s my edit of the most expensive looking buys on the high street right now, all priced at under £250. For a guilt-free shopping experience, keep scrolling…

Buy the most expensive looking item on the high street

H&M linen blend bandeau top

H&M Linen-blend twill trousers

If you’re looking to create a high-end look, tailoring is a great place to start: This linen-blend outfit could pass for designer, thanks to its sleek lines and chic wide-leg trousers.

Mango halter floral dress

I’m pretty sure this dress isn’t from Mango but some small brand from LA. Imagine wearing it on holiday with a pair of matching red heels – perfect!

Aligne Leo denim pinstripe waistcoat

Aligne makes some of the finest waistcoats and tailored clothing on the high street and this denim offering might just be my favourite yet.

Zara embellished flat slider sandals

Looking expensive doesn’t mean you have to choose something super simple: these Zara sandals feature bronze dragonfly detailing, giving them a luxurious and unique feel.

COS Embellished Mini Shift Dress

If you’re opting for a high street embellished style, always make sure the design continues onto the back for a premium look – this one does just that and looks super cute.

M&S Relaxed Single Breasted Blazer in Butterscotch

You’ll be wearing this blazer so much that no one will ever guess it’s from M&S – feel free to choose a size or two up if you prefer a looser fit.

Nextweave shoulder bag with orb key ring

The weave, rich chocolate colour and gold detailing all combine to make this bag look far more expensive than its price tag of just £44.

Mint velvet pink cotton tie front top

I won’t say what brand it is, but I can say that this top is one of my favorite designer brands. As well as this hot pink shade, it also comes in black for a more subtle look.

River Island Cream Ruched Kitten Heel Pumps

I couldn’t wait to add these kitten heels to my basket, they’re the perfect summer shoe that won’t hurt your feet.

& Other Stories Pleated Drawstring Midi Skirt

The drawstring waist of this chic midi skirt proves that detailing can completely transform a simple piece into something luxurious and classy.

John Lewis Eos floral twist neck swimsuit

The beautiful floral pattern on this swimsuit is reminiscent of one of the most iconic bohemian designer brands, plus it’s currently on sale so you can grab a bargain.

Massimo Dutti knitted cotton blend top

Massimo Dutti excels at luxury pieces and this knitted top is proof of that: simple and sophisticated at its best.

Reese Crete wide-leg flare jeans

When choosing expensive-looking denim, it’s important to consider the wash as well as the fit. Avoid rips, burnt details and tones for a polished look.

Kitri Talisa pastel floral knit midi dress

Kitri makes some of my favorite affordable occasion wear that’s unique yet luxurious. This floral print dress with tassel trim would be perfect to wear to a beach wedding.

New Look Off-White Oversized Leopard Lemon Print Resort Shirt

New Look White Lemon Tiger Fruit Print Shorts

Playful, printed outfits are all the rage right now, and this set from New Look is perfect for that trend.

Whistles Premium Cotton Crochet Circle Shirt

This shirt has lots of luxe details—we love it all, from the laser-cut lace to the pearl buttons—plus, it even comes with a matching skirt if you want to try a full coordinating look.

If you’re looking for simple, high-quality separates, head to Arket. These linen pants will complement a variety of outfit combinations throughout spring, summer, and beyond.

I’m obsessed with this striped slip dress from Hush. Not only would it look great with sandals, but I can also imagine pairing it with kitten heel sandals and a low cut bun for a more dressed up look.
