Is TikTok’s ‘Morning Shed’ trend good for your skin?

Is it time to shed some skin? Maybe not. But there’s a trend going around on TikTok named “Morning shed,” which doesn’t have much to do with skincare but rather emphasizes on shedding some skin.

The viral “morning skincare” video on Tiktok has garnered over 77 million views. Morning skincare means using multiple skincare products and treatments at night and then removing all the products in the morning. The idea is to sleep with multiple products on — anti-wrinkle patches, mouth tape, eye masks, overnight sheet masks — and then remove them in the morning to reveal refreshed skin.

Is the Morning Shed trend worth all the fuss?

While many people stick to simple nighttime skincare routines like lipstick and face masks, influencers like Kayla Lee Mills are going all out with their skincare routines, a trend that claims that going to bed “ugly” will help you wake up looking better.

Dermatologists recommend avoiding this habit, but the evidence for its effectiveness is weak. For example, a typical habit of morning shade is to tape your mouth, which requires you to breathe through your nose. This isn’t suitable for everyone and can even be harmful, especially for those with problems like sleep apnea.

Can “morning hair loss” irritate your skin and disrupt your sleep?

According to Healthline, a consultant dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic described the trend as “quite excessive and time-consuming”.

Consultant dermatologist Sophie Morman says: “Getting ready to sleep with all these agents on can be very time-consuming and barely necessary. Drenching the skin in thick serums and products can clog pores and lead to breakouts – and in the delicate eye area, it can cause milia to form.”

Imagine layering on skin care products and treatments, toning your jaw muscles, and then going to bed. While some people find this satisfying and beneficial, experts say it can interfere with your quality of sleep and potentially lead to one of the negative side effects of skin care: breakouts.
