Kim Jones’ personal style is inspired by armor and particular obsessions.
Ask Kim Jones how she got into dressing up and she’ll tell you about Styrofoam. “[I] “I wanted to recreate the Spice Girls platform, so I used to stick Styrofoam onto some clogs that I owned,” she confesses. “Would I have stuck with wearing it around the house and having Styrofoam all over the place, even though it was awful? Did I have to vacuum it all? That too. I agree.”
Although those bespoke shoes are long gone, Kim continues to see fashion as a result of her lived experience, and remains influenced by the British, at least for now. The actress, who spends much of her time in London, is partial to large coats as armor in crowds, and teased that she would buy modern pauldrons if she could. She is often seen clad in noir suits with an hourglass curve at the waist or jackets that draw attention to her shoulders. Along with lace and light silk, it’s the shapely garments that make her feel most empowered.
After pivoting from fashion to film in recent years, Kim’s wardrobe has evolved to almost exclusively black “to avoid overstimulating my brain and what’s left of it after eight hours of writing.” She tends to favor intimate pieces with hints of mystery that illuminate her senses in subtle ways, much like the art she creates and consumes. “It’s really enlightening to wear fashion that suits your style rather than just turning heads everywhere,” she recommends. “When you find movies, poetry, and art that resonate deeply with you, you learn a lot about who you are.”
