Lil Yachty criticizes New York fashion, gets slammed by Juelz Santana for “your butt”

Lil Yachty’s recent comments about New York fashion have drawn a lot of backlash, especially from Harlem’s Juelz Santana. On the July 24 episode of A Safe Place Podcast, Yachty made waves when he spoke out about New York City’s influence on fashion and hip-hop. The Atlanta rapper suggested that New York’s fashion scene lacks originality and that Atlanta is the new trendsetter in the industry.

Yachty’s controversial remarks

On the podcast, Lil Yachty expressed his view that New York’s fashion scene has lost steam. “I feel like New York has never had, I don’t want to say an identity,” Yachty said. He suggested that New York has placed too much emphasis on local brands and styles, with Atlanta emerging as the dominant trendsetter. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with New York fashion, style-wise,” Yachty continued, citing the popularity of brands like Purple Label and Amiri as evidence of New York’s stagnation.

Yachty’s comments didn’t sit well with many New York residents, who were quick to defend New York’s longstanding influence on fashion and hip-hop culture. In a subsequent TikTok video, Yachty attempted to clarify his position, acknowledging New York’s historical influence but arguing that Atlanta has taken the lead in recent years. Nonetheless, he continued to praise Atlanta’s current fashion scene and its ability to lead the way.

Juelz Santana responds angrily

Juelz Santana quickly responded to Yachty’s remarks. On Instagram, Santana called Yachty’s comments an attempt to “erase us from history.” He cited influential New York figures like Fabolous, A$AP Rocky, and Jim Jones, highlighting how New York has long been a style and trendsetter. “New York doesn’t know New York except how to dress up,” Santana argued, highlighting the city’s role in shaping fashion trends that have been adopted by Atlanta and other cities.

Santana’s strong response reflects broader sentiment among New Yorkers who believe Yachty’s comments belittle New York’s rich cultural contributions. While acknowledging Atlanta’s current influence, Santana and other critics feel Yachty’s remarks overlook New York’s fundamental influence in fashion and style innovation.

The dispute highlights the ongoing rivalry between Atlanta and New York in the worlds of hip hop and fashion, as the dispute continues and each city continues to push for its own unique style and contribution to the broader cultural landscape.
