In the final moments before the crowning ceremony, Alexis Smith denounced her abuser, who was sitting in the audience during the beauty pageant. Before being selected from a field of 26 contestants to represent Kansas in the Miss America pageant in 2025, Smith was asked about her goals for the future. “My vision as the next Miss Kansas is to put an end to unhealthy and abusive relationships,” the 25-year-old explained, before publicly denounced her own abuser.

“Indeed, some of you in this audience will have seen that I am very emotional because an abuser is here with us today.
