Former Baltimore Oriole Austin Hayes appears to have issues with gay people.
The MLB player was apparently not a fan of the Orioles’ Pride Night celebration, which elevated the status of the LGBTQ community in sports, which, as Outsports has documented, has long documented the hardships gay and bisexual people have endured in sports.
Hayes’ Instagram post included a photo of himself kneeling in prayer on the Orioles’ LGBTQ Pride Night, appearing to be praying to God, with the caption:
“Therefore put on the whole armor of God, so that when the evil day comes, you will be able to stand, and having done all, to stand. 14 Therefore stand firm, having the belt of truth buckled around your waist, and the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and having your feet shod in the preparation of the gospel of peace. 16 Also, take up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Get off the sidelines and get in the game
Our weekly newsletter is packed with information on everything from locker room chatter to pressing LGBTQ sports issues.
We don’t know the full extent of Hayes’ feelings towards LGBTQ people in sports, but his post about a “bad day” on Pride Night seems pretty telling.
Hayes has been with the Orioles since 2017 and hit for the cycle in 2022 — meaning he hit a single, double, triple and home run in one game — and has played a key role in the team’s success both at the plate and running the bases.
He was just traded to the Philadelphia Phillies this week.
