After decades of donning striking makeup looks on stage, American singer-songwriter and skincare founder Ciara Princess Harris (better known as Ciara) is no stranger to taking on a glamorous beauty routine. From wearing vibrant, timeless red lipstick to changing up her hairstyle to suit the season, the 38-year-old’s beauty evolution has been steady since her 2004 debut studio album, Goodies, and her career has provided plenty of beauty inspiration on stage and on the red carpet.
We caught up with the singer, who was recently announced as NARS’ newest ambassador, to talk about her date night lipstick, makeup inspirations and how being a mother has influenced her relationship with beauty.

“You always want to stay true to yourself and know that beauty resonates from the inside out. Experiment and embrace beauty in whatever way you can to make it shine as brightly as possible within yourself.”
Her makeup style
“I love wearing makeup every day. I’m a ‘less is more’ kind of girl, and when I’m doing okay in my everyday life, I opt for a more natural look. Then when I’m on stage and I want to be dramatic, I get to have those moments. Doing stage makeup is a whole other level of process. My makeup artist, Yolonda Frederick, has been working with me since I was a baby 16 years old, and we’ve performed together a lot over the years. I think we’ve grown up together.”

“I’m obsessed with pinkish nude lip colors. When I’m on stage, I also like to make my lips more prominent and add a bit of gloss. Lining my lips helps to accentuate them and really make me stand out on stage. My favorite color is classic red. Nothing beats a timeless, bold red lip. My favorite thing to do on date night is to wear NARS Explicit Lipstick in Unauthorized. When I do this, who knows how date night will go?”
On who has influenced her beauty look over the years
“My makeup artist, Yolanda. Not only is she my makeup artist, she is also my best friend and was my bridesmaid. She has a beauty that is second to none. She is 60 now and I am amazed at how beautiful she is and how well she carries herself. I have to give love to my grandmother as well. Every time I saw her in her best outfits, her makeup was always so beautifully applied and she always looked elegant.”

How has being a mother influenced your outlook on beauty?
“I quickly learned to stay groomed because I don’t have that much time anymore. With four kids, it’s the only option. It’s been a big adjustment, but I love it. Having babies, especially my daughters, has inspired me to take care of myself and level up my beauty efforts. My 7-year-old daughter definitely looks up to me and every night when I’m on tour, she sits in the salon chair by herself after I’m done. She loves to copy what I do, which is so cute to watch.”

“This is a huge dream come true for me and a major milestone in my career. I have been a fan of NARS my whole life. It’s an iconic brand. There is such a sexy vibe about the brand and it is one of the best beauty brands in the world. Becoming an ambassador means so much to me in every way.”

Hopes for the future of beauty
“Beauty is a world of experimentation. The most amazing thing for me is seeing new innovations. Brands are constantly striving to be innovative and thoughtful, which I think is so important. People are now educated, which I think is great, because they’re demanding forward thinking from brands.”
