History of New York Fashion Week
New York Fashion Week’s origins date back to 1943, when fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert founded Press Week in an effort to shift attention away from Paris and focus on American fashion during World War II. . This initiative was a turning point for American designers, providing a platform to showcase their work to media and buyers without relying on European fashion capital.
In the decades that followed, New York’s status as a fashion capital grew exponentially. By the 1990s, under the guidance of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), NYFW had established itself as one of the “Big Four” fashion weeks, along with Paris, Milan, and London. During this era, iconic designers like Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, and Calvin Klein helped put American fashion on the world map.
NYFW continued to evolve with the rise of digital media. In the 2010s, live streaming of runway shows became the norm, making the event accessible to millions of fashion lovers around the world.
