Several Pixar employees are reportedly very unhappy with the theatrical cuts of Pixar’s latest film, “Elio.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter (THR), staff at Disney’s beloved animation film studio is upset that LGBTQ elements from the film were removed before its final theatrical release.
“Through the production of the first version of the film, that was pretty clear. [studio leaders] We were constantly polishing these moments in the film that hinted at the strange sexuality of the film,” the anonymous artist who worked on the film told the outlet.

Several Pixar staff members revealed that “Elio” (the latest Pixar offering about a boy who accidentally shines from Earth, and the latest Pixar offering about boys interacting with the alien inter-racial intergalactic bodies) was heavily edited to be less obviously LGBTQ.
“According to several insiders who spoke to the Hollywood Reporter, Elio was initially portrayed as a queer-coded character, reflecting the openly gay filmmaker identity of the original director Adrian Morina.”
The director ended the project after Molina screened the film’s cuts for Pixar’s leadership. Rumor has spread that his post-screening conversation with Pixar COO Peter Dotter “harms” him. Molina was replaced by co-directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi.
The elements cut out from the film are said to include Elio’s own makeshift fashion show, his love for environmentalism, and scenes that suggest that he fell in love with another boy.

As the outlet stated, “This feature gradually faded through the entire production process as Elio became more masculine following the feedback from leadership.”
Despite these changes, the film became the worst box-office bomb in Pixar’s history, earning just $20 million domestically over the weekend. The film was originally scheduled to be released in March 2024 and was delayed by about a year, costing over $200 million.
Sarah Ligatich, a member of Pixar’s internal LGTBQ group PixPride, told Hollywood Reporter that he was “deeply saddened and troubled by the changes that have been made.”
She added that there is a “talent escape” after the staff saw Sharafian and Domee watched the film’s cut.

The anonymous artist characterised the film’s change and said, “All of a sudden, I’m going to delete this big, important piece. It’s about identity, and Elio is nothing at all.
Disney has had multiple controversies over LGBTQ themes in some of its recent films.
Reports that “Elio” is sanding down an LGBTQ theme following the Pixar trial seeking controversy over the LGBTQ themes of other films. Pixar’s 2022 film “Lightyear” features same-sex kisses and reportedly revived for the theatrical version of the film.
Pixar’s 2020 film “Onward” features a female Cyclops character who at some point in the film mentions her girlfriend.
The anonymous Pixar artist calls company executives for a cut to “Elio” and “want to ask Pete and the other Disney executives if they thought the rewrite was worth it.” [Molina] Do you want to talk about him? ”
