Calling all builders, craftsmen and woodworkers. Montgomery Parks will hold its annual Urban Wood Sale on the weekend of November 9-10, 2024. The Urban Wood Sale will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 9-10, 2024, from 8 a.m. to noon at Green Farm in Montgomery Parks. Maintenance Facility (8301 Turkey Thicket Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20879).

The wood available at the sale comes from dead or dying trees removed from Montgomery Park property. Each year, park arborists remove hundreds of trees as part of Montgomery Parks’ program to promote healthy tree canopies. Some of the felled trees are suitable for timber sales, while others are recycled into wood chips, mulch and firewood through Montgomery Park’s green waste recycling program.

Types of wood sold include walnut, cherry, poplar, oak, mulberry, cypress, and ash. The wood is kiln dried, planed and air dried. Slabs are available in a variety of lengths and thicknesses from three-quarters of an inch to three inches.

This year’s sale will also include a limited quantity of wood from the historic Linden Oak Tree. The tree, estimated to be 300 years old, was cut down last year because its health was failing. Limited to one Linden Oak wood per person.

“The Urban Wood Sale has grown to be a very popular program for Montgomery Parks,” said Patrick Harwood, Montgomery Parks Forester. “Customers line up early and shop on a first-come, first-served basis. This year we plan to have a food truck here selling snacks to boost shoppers’ energy.”

The wood sold ranges in price from $5 to $400 depending on the size, quality and type of wood. Payment is by credit card only. There are no advance sales. If all the wood is purchased by the scheduled end time, the event will end early. All proceeds from urban wood sales will be donated to Montgomery Park’s urban wood waste recycling program and green waste recycling program.
