Quantum Witch is an upcoming retro pixel art game inspired by classics like Metroid, Castlevania and Link to the Past, with a focus on queer storylines and characters. What sets it apart from similar games is its Douglas Adams-esque humor and fourth wall breaking elements.
In Quantum Witch, Wren’s tranquil life in her hometown of Hus is threatened with collapse when she becomes embroiled in a conflict between ancient gods and has to complete more fetch quests. In Hus, you can visit pools, trade in the town, plant a flower or two, and take precautions in the wilderness after dark. Oh, and stay away from the mountain. Just stay away. Don’t ask me why. lest it happen again.
Quantum Witch is a very meta-inspired game. It starts out simple but quickly becomes very complex. There are numerous references to popular games, the fourth wall is never broken, characters become very aware of their situations, every decision has an impact on the entire game, the puzzles are full of puns, and the accompanying music is beautiful.
It’s nice to see that there is a cat, and of course you can pet it.
In addition to the art style, music, and humor, there are lesbians. Lots of lesbians. Tall lesbians, short lesbians, older lesbians, young lesbians, cisgender lesbians, transgender lesbians…all kinds of lesbians!
Nikki Jay is the sole developer of Quantum Witch, with BAFTA-nominated writer Paul Rose providing scriptwriting and assisting with character development, and music by Christopher Jerden-Cooke and Nikki Jay.
Speaking of the game’s background and inspiration, Nikki explains, “It originally started as a novel, a comedic exploration of past trauma from religion and prejudice against queer people. That was until I realised I hated writing novels. I transitioned to telling stories through point-and-click adventures, but realised I hated the ‘combine every item with every other item to make mood logic’ scenarios that point-and-click can easily fall into. Now I tell stories in a fun, interactive way, where small choices make a difference and every puzzle has some kind of pun in it.”
