New comments from a senior Sanrio executive have sparked controversy, saying Hello Kitty is not a kitten and clarifying her authentic background.
Sanrio advertises the Hello Kitty & Friends Varsity Jacket thusly: “Look stylish and have fun in this Sanrio jacket. In traditional letterman style, this outerwear piece features a chenille appliqué of Hello Kitty’s initials and sporty embroidered details on the sleeves and chest. Quilted brushed cotton ensures a comfortable fit, making it a game day essential. ” Exclusive to BoxLunch, the jacket features an organic cotton twill outer shell and polyester lining and is available in sizes from XS to 3XL.
Sanrio and BoxLunch regularly collaborate, and the site features more than 738 products, including a 28-piece Hello Kitty floral collection that CBR exclusively revealed in April. The set includes pajamas, hoodies, caps, jumpers, T-shirts, home decor, jewelry and more, joining a range of releases offered by retailers like Nordstrom and Forever 21 in celebration of Hello Kitty’s 50th anniversary this year.

The new sports collection arrives just weeks before Hello Kitty Night at Dodgers Stadium in August 2024. Tickets are still available for the event, which will mark its second appearance following a hugely successful inaugural event in April. The event is expected to feature exclusive merchandise, stadium-wide giveaways, media activations and more. Dodgers Stadium recently hosted VTuber giants Hololive, and the Japanese-American crossover theme will continue with My Hero Academia Night at Texas Rangers Stadium this fall.
