Right now, there’s one shoe that’s at the top of my wish list that I would never have considered buying a year ago. Just a few months ago, I was under the impression that heels and boots should only have one of three toe shapes: almond, pointy, or square. Round-toe styles didn’t exist in my world, except for shapes associated with ballet. Every time I see shoes on an outing or at a fashion event, I am always noticeably surprised. Maybe it’s because all the trending shoe styles in recent memory have felt sharp, long, pointy, and antithetical.
Peter Mullier then debuted Alaïa’s Fall/Winter 24 collection. Among them were multiple pairs of ankle strap pumps with large toe cleavages and delicate rounded toes. The controversial heels, made from patent leather, came in classic black and white as well as shades of blush pink, cerulean, and regal purple. In an instant, everything I thought I knew about round-toe shoes was quickly ushered out the door. All that was left was admiration and a desire to wear more than one pair of the style he had once sworn to wear.

It didn’t take long for the entire fashion world to catch on to its popularity. Weeks after Alaïa’s January 2024 show, the round-toe shoe proved to be more than just a one-hit wonder when the February show began. Carven’s Paris show featured rounded flat boots in sumptuous brown and champagne-colored satin, while Proenza Schouler’s New York show featured rounded flat boots with the same smooth toe-shaped heel. We featured wide calf boots. Sportmax’s Fall/Winter 24 collection, which debuted in Milan, included a number of round-toe, ankle-strap pumps similar to Alaia’s, but with narrower heels and new hues such as navy blue and red. .
Midway through this season’s New York Fashion Week, I came across a lust-worthy pair at the Neous showroom and immediately knew what I had to do. I took a photo, posted it on my Instagram story, and added a poll to find out what the general consensus is about round-toe shoes and their growing popularity. 55% of participants voted against reinstating round-toes.
