Surf Rock opens urban surf pool in Rotterdam
Wave technology pioneer Erik van Ettinger of Surf Loch presents RiF010, an urban surf pool located on the Steigersgracht in the heart of Rotterdam. Measuring 125 meters in length and 25 meters in width, the facility generates ocean-like waves up to 1.5 meters high, crashing towards the Wesenburg Bridge and onto a pebble beach. The project includes a concrete basin installed within an old quay, a wave installation near the Markthal, and a newly built beach house with a restaurant, surf bar, and shop. Notably, RiF010 runs entirely on sustainably produced energy to support both the wave generation and the needs of the beach house.

RiF010 uses Lotte water to generate ocean-like waves
Boasting a storage capacity of 4,000 cubic meters, the water reservoir of RiF010 by Surf Loch is filled with water from the River Lotte and purified by an energy-efficient drum filter system. This filter ensures that all water in the water reservoir is treated every 7 hours. The surf pool manufacturer aims to provide a comprehensive surfing experience in the city through RiF010. Complete with a range of amenities, it makes it accessible and attractive to non-surfers as well. An artificial reef allows the generated waves to break naturally. Soft waves are created at the edge of the wave pool, perfect for beginners who want to try out the sport. The wave equipment, controlled from the beach house, offers a surfing experience for both beginners and advanced surfers, and the wave settings can be adjusted to accommodate different skill levels. The facility also offers canoe and stand-up paddleboard rentals, allowing visitors to explore Rotterdam’s waterways. The official water facility opening on July 6th hosted the Rotterdam Surf Open, an international surfing competition. The RiF010 Foundation aims to introduce local primary school children to water sports by turning the facility into a recreational spot and community hub.
