Tyra graced the 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City on Monday, wearing a Gucci Spring 1996 black lace dress by Tom Ford. It is a stunning archival piece that brings a piece of fashion history into the present. With a newfound embrace of archival fashion on the red carpet, this homage to Tom Ford’s iconic Gucci days has a natural appeal, and Tyra certainly looked stunning in this dress.
But when juxtaposed with her recent red carpet choices, this look starts to feel like deja vu. It follows the familiar formula that began to define her style on the high-profile stage.
This dress follows the same formula as the shredded area dress and revealing green underwear worn at the VMAs. While bold, it’s starting to feel repetitive.
We can’t help but think this was the ideal event for her to break away from her signature look. The CFDA Awards celebrate innovation, design, and creative risk.
Here, Tyra had a chance to step out of her comfort zone and show a different side: the CFDA instead of the VMAs. Instead, her style started to feel a little one-dimensional, leaning into the familiar and choosing not to push boundaries.
She certainly looks great, but I would like more variety. We’ve seen lace, exposure, and edgy glamour, but in the future she’ll veer into something unexpected.
