Former President Donald Trump paid tribute to firefighter Cory Comperatore at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night, unveiling a uniform complete with firefighter gear, though it didn’t correctly feature his name.
The name of Fire Chief Corey Comperatore, who was killed in an assassination attempt at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was mistakenly written on a jacket brought onto the stage at the convention. But it wasn’t Trump’s doing. The Buffalo Township Fire Department confirmed it was his gear, that it was sent to Trump and that the former president wore during his speech.
Trump mentioned Corey during his speech, saying he had been in touch with the Comperatore family, and kissed Corey’s firefighter helmet onstage as a sign of respect for the slain hero.

The fire brigade did not say why the spelling was wrong, but responded to a reader who pointed it out on their Facebook page, saying “the mistake was made years ago and Corey left it there.”
On former Twitter handle X, many praised Trump for taking time in his speech to remember Corey.
“Trump has some Corey Compartore gear in there. Perfect touch,” one X user wrote.
Another shared, “Such an emotional moment as Corey Compartore’s firefighter gear was sent to the Republican National Convention. The families of all those injured will be taken care of with over $6 million raised, this tragedy should never have happened. #TrumpRally #RepublicanNationalConvention #News.”
A third wrote: “Donald Trump’s speech tonight was amazing. The moment he paid tribute to Corey Compartore by kissing his shelter gear brought tears to my eyes. You could see how much he cares for his family in that moment. He is truly a great man. I hope the haters wake up and realize the real Donald Trump.”

Mr Corey is left behind two daughters, one of whom has spoken out since her father’s death. His daughter Allison said on Facebook that “time stood still” and then, when it started moving again, she and her family “began living a real life nightmare”.
The Trump rally where Corey was killed took place on Saturday, July 14. Gunshots rang out moments after Trump was speaking on stage. The FBI named the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Minutes after the shots rang out, police helped Trump to his feet, surrounded him and escorted him off the stage, with blood streaming from his ears and blood on his face, as they escorted him away, raising his fists toward the crowd.
