The Roman authorities and Lazio Football Club are planning major infrastructure investments to improve mobility and accessibility to the new Stadio Flaminio. The project includes numerous public transport and urban infrastructure improvements to alleviate traffic problems and make the stadium easier for fans to reach.
Infrastructure Planning
Rome’s transport councillor, Eugenio Patane, appeared on Radio Sei’s “Sei Volte Buongiorno” show to talk about Flaminio’s plans to support the infrastructure. One of the key elements of the project is the construction of two new metro stations close to the stadium. Currently, the lack of a direct metro connection is a major problem for hosting major sporting events. The new stations are intended to provide fans with an efficient means of transport while relieving the strain on the city’s roads. The planned stations are part of a new metro line linking Piazza Venezia with the Farnesina, and will also include the Apollo d’Oro station.
In addition to the metro infrastructure, the project also envisages the development of a tram network. A new tram line is planned to connect Piazza Flaminio to the Flaminio Stadium. An additional connection will be added to the existing tram line 2, increasing public transport capacity on match days.
The Flaminio project also includes the creation of 15 new car parks providing around 5,000 parking spaces. Special bus routes are also planned for out-of-town fans, with the aim of reducing the number of cars in the city centre on match days.

Financial Aid and Schedule
The implementation of the project requires significant funding, estimated at €12 billion. These funds will be raised in stages as part of a long-term cooperation with the government. The goal is to complete all work within the next decade and to be able to fully implement the new solutions by 2030.
The Flaminio project is being developed in collaboration with the Lazio club, which is due to present detailed plans for the stadium by the end of 2024. City and club authorities have agreed on the importance of a thorough analysis of the project’s impact on urban traffic and the need to align the plans with existing urban development.

Positive reactions to redevelopment
“It’s of great quality,” Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said in an interview with Sky TG24 about the renderings of Lazio’s new stadium. From a practical standpoint, it’s positive that the club is interested, that the stadium needs investment to be renovated, and that there are private candidates.
Onorato believes the stadium plan is very ambitious, emphasizing the beauty of the facility and its architecture. He added that he is very optimistic and that Lotito has taken concrete steps and is serious about the plan. Patane also commented on the overall redevelopment, saying that the Lazio region and the authorities in Rome have confidence in the plan.
