Urban League’s ‘Slow Down’ campaign aims to curb speeding in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – A brand new collaboration is spreading an important message.

James Clark is vice president of public safety for the St. Louis Metropolitan League. He says the Urban League’s new “Slow Down” campaign is getting a big boost from new partners.

“Public safety is not just the responsibility of law enforcement or the government,” Clark said just outside Confluence Academy in South City. “The community has a role to play.”

Their role is to spread the message “slow down” on signs around the city.

Where to vote before Election Day in the St. Louis area

Clark said he doesn’t expect the issue to be resolved in one day.

“We know yard signs aren’t a silver bullet, but they can be a conversation starter,” he says.

Confluence Academies is working with North Side Community School, Soulard School, Lafayette Preparatory Academy, Momentum Academy, Biome School, and Gateway Science Academy to install “slow” signs around their campuses.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Halloween is just two days away, and kids will be out and about trick-or-treating in bright, colorful, and distracting costumes.

Dr. Candace Carter-Oliver, president of Confluence Academies, says it has to be safe for kids to enjoy the evening.

“We want drivers, us drivers, to be very aware of our driving habits,” she said.

The Urban League said it has received messages from city residents saying the signs warn them to check their speed and drive more carefully.

If you need a sign, please call the St. Louis Metropolitan League at 314-337-3683.
